Apple Prepares Revolutionary 20th Anniversary iPhone

Apple introduced the iPhone X in 2017, marking a significant milestone with innovations like Face ID, a notch design, and reduced bezels. The company is now preparing for its 20th anniversary, with rumors suggesting the 2027 iPhone will bring transformative changes and potentially eclipse the impact of the iPhone X.

Reports indicate Apple has been developing a design featuring a seamless, single-piece glass panel, eliminating all cutouts and frames. This would create a truly bezel-less experience, with the screen curving along all four edges of the device. While this design could impact case compatibility, Apple has previously employed Ceramic Shield 2 to enhance device durability. The company’s efforts could be seen as steps to mitigate those potential concerns.

Realizing this “all-glass” design necessitates Apple’s departure from Dynamic Island and the front-facing camera cutout. Discrepancies exist regarding the feasibility of under-display Face ID technology; some analysts believe Apple might not be ready by 2027, while others anticipate its implementation. A hybrid solution, where Face ID sensors are under-display with a small camera cutout, remains a possibility.

The 20th-anniversary iPhone is also expected to feature a brighter and thinner OLED panel, reportedly incorporating Samsung’s Color On Encapsulation (COE) technology. This eliminates the polarizing film, applying the color filter directly to the encapsulation layer, reducing panel thickness and increasing brightness while improving power efficiency. A “crater-shaped light distribution layer” may also be added to ensure even brightness across curved edges.

Camera enhancements include a dedicated HDR sensor capable of capturing up to 20 stops of dynamic range, potentially rivaling the performance of professional cinema cameras. Apple also plans to integrate its own-design modem across the iPhone lineup. By 2027, Apple’s modems are anticipated to outperform Qualcomm counterparts in speed, AI functionality, and power efficiency. The iPhone 18 series will use 2nm A20 chips, while the 20th anniversary model is expected to feature a second-generation 2nm A21 chip.

Similar to Apple’s 2017 strategy, where the iPhone 9 was skipped, the company may employ a non-sequential naming convention. Following the iPhone 18 series, the 2027 model could be named “iPhone 20” or “iPhone XX.” Speculation suggests the launch of Apple’s first foldable iPhone could be delayed to 2027, potentially indicating further surprises for the anniversary. The device is most likely to be unveiled in September 2027, maintaining Apple’s traditional launch schedule.
