Claude Memory Launches with ChatGPT Sync

Starting today, Claude Memory is available to all paid Claude users. The new feature lets the chatbot retain details about projects, context and other user‑specified information across sessions. Memory can be turned on or off, and users can delete specific memories or switch to an Incognito mode for a clean slate.

Claude’s memory is project‑based, ensuring that a startup roadmap does not interfere with a screenplay draft or vacation plan. Users can edit or remove memories as needed. Anthropic’s update places Claude in direct competition with ChatGPT’s persistent memory and adds another incentive to choose Claude Pro or Max for multi‑step tasks, technical builds or creative work that spans weeks.

A distinctive advantage of Claude is the ability to import memory data from other accounts or from ChatGPT. In Settings > Memory > Import Memory, users can upload a text file or paste a summary that was exported from ChatGPT. Pasting key information—such as tone, brand rules or bio—into a Claude project’s instructions also grants the model the same long‑term context it had in ChatGPT. While a one‑click importer is not yet available, the manual steps allow users to transfer essential context between the two platforms.

Claude Memory is part of a broader rollout of Claude Pro and Max enhancements, including Web Search, Voice Mode, Claude Code, research tools, file creation, custom workflow skills, and integrations with Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Canva and Figma. All run on the Claude 4 family, featuring Opus 4.1, Sonnet 4.5 and Haiku 4.5. Anthropic reports that Memory has undergone extensive safety testing and was refined to avoid reinforcing harmful behaviors. Chief Product Officer Mike Krieger stated, “Memory starts with project continuity, but it’s really about creating sustained thinking partnerships that evolve over weeks and months.” The feature is live for Max subscribers and will be released to Pro users in the coming days.
