Various government initiatives aim to improve the lives of Indian farmers through better social security, financial assistance, and modern irrigation techniques.
India, known as an agricultural powerhouse, offers numerous government schemes aimed at improving the lives of its farmers. With around 90 to 150 million farmers in the country, these initiatives aim to alleviate poverty and enhance livelihoods.
The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Maan-Dhan Yojana (PM-KMY), launched on December 12, 2019, provides pension benefits to farmers after they turn 60. This scheme ensures that elderly farmers receive a monthly pension of Rs 3,000 and doubles the farmer’s contribution with an equal amount from the government.
The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana offers financial aid to farmers to purchase essential agricultural supplies. Each eligible family receives Rs 6,000 annually, paid in three installments of Rs 2,000 each.
The Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY) focuses on providing water security to farmers through advanced irrigation techniques. The goal is to ensure that crops are not solely dependent on rainwater and have access to modern farming equipment.
Under the PMKSY, a network of pipes will be established to deliver water directly to farms, alongside developing new water sources for efficient irrigation.
The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana offers crop insurance at a premium rate between 2 and 5 percent. Farmers receive financial assistance if their crops are damaged due to natural calamities or other causes, ensuring they do not face significant losses.
The Kisan Credit Card (KCC) scheme provides farmers with crop loans up to Rs 3 lakh from government banks at a low interest rate of 7 percent. Early repayment leads to an additional discount of 3 percent, making it easier for farmers to manage their finances.
This scheme provides a monthly pension of Rs 3,000 to eligible farmers after they turn 60 years old. The government matches the farmer’s contribution.
Each eligible family receives Rs 6,000 annually in three installments of Rs 2,000 each to purchase essential agricultural supplies.
The PMKSY aims to ensure that farmers have access to water for their crops through modern irrigation techniques and equipment.
