Ekurhuleni Adopts Huawei Wi-Fi Shield to Secure Its Energy Network

City of Ekurhuleni (COE), located in Gauteng, South Africa, is renowned for having one of the highest urbanization rates at 97%. It’s also considered a highly industrialized economic hub. COE is accelerating its digital transformation process and the reliability of electricity supply stands out as a key driver of its dynamism.

The original electrical campus networks have become outdated, with many devices still operating on Wi-Fi 5 standards. The result was weak signal strength and limited coverage, negatively impacting staff productivity and overall network experience. Manually identifying individual faults in the vast number of devices used in the old wireless campus infrastructure consumed a significant amount of time and increased operational costs.

Data security also emerged as a critical concern. With aging and insufficiently secure network infrastructure, top-level officials at COE’s electricity department were seriously worried about potential data breaches. Faced with these three major challenges, COE leveraged Huawei’s Xinghe Intelligent and High-Quality 10 Gbps Campus Network Solution to configure its electrical energy campus network around three key objectives.

To enhance office efficiency through high-speed wireless access, COE adopted the Huawei Wi-Fi 7 technology, which provides high-speed wireless access and extensive network coverage. The new system aims to create a robust infrastructure for future business growth. Additionally, to secure the electricity energy campus network, Huawei’s innovative Wi-Fi Shield technology was introduced. This technology uses an Access Point (AP) to precisely detect the physical location of target users while simultaneously emitting random noise signals during data transmission to shield communications from being intercepted.
