GM to Integrate Google Gemini AI Assistant in Vehicles Starting 2026

General Motors will introduce a conversational AI assistant powered by Google Gemini to its vehicles, including cars, trucks, and SUVs, beginning next year. The announcement was made Wednesday during the automaker’s GM Forward event in New York City.

The Gemini integration represents a significant advancement in GM’s technology roadmap, with other upgrades like an overhaul of its electrical architecture and an automated driving feature slated for 2028. This move aligns with other major automakers, with Stellantis collaborating with Mistral AI, Mercedes integrating ChatGPT, and Tesla adding xAI’s Grok to its vehicles.

GM’s vehicles, including models from Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC, already feature “Google built-in,” providing access to Google Assistant, Maps, and other apps. The new Gemini-powered assistant builds upon this foundation, promising improved natural language understanding and contextual awareness. Dave Richardson, senior vice president of software and services at GM, explained that the AI will leverage large language models to overcome limitations found in existing voice assistants, enabling more intuitive interactions, such as drafting messages, planning routes with charging stops, and accessing web-based information.

The new assistant will be delivered via over-the-air (OTA) updates through the Play Store for OnStar-equipped vehicles manufactured from 2015 onward. GM plans to test additional foundational models from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, and emphasizes customer control over data access and usage. GM has also prioritized data privacy and governance, establishing a dedicated team and implementing robust protocols, ensuring any collected data will be used solely for product improvement and not for revenue generation.

Key takeaways:

  • GM will integrate Google Gemini AI assistant in its vehicles starting in 2026.
  • The assistant will be delivered via OTA updates for OnStar-equipped vehicles from 2015 onwards.
  • GM emphasizes user control over data access and prioritizes data privacy measures.
