Huawei Rejected by Three in Four Canadians, poll results

In a Canadian poll, Huawei was Rejected by Three out of Four Canadians on the Eve of its 5G Decision. More than 75% of Canadians agree that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government is China’s Huawei Technologies Co. He says his company should ban its involvement in the construction of fifth-generation telecommunications networks.

Opposition to Huawei’s involvement in 5G rose from 53% in 2019, according to the survey published Monday by Nanos Research for the Globe and Mail. Trudeau did not refuse to involve Huawei and is expected to make a decision soon.

The increase in Huawei disapproval reflects the simmering public anger since December 2018, when China imprisoned Canadian company executives Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig in the days after Canada arrested Huawei Finance Director Meng Wanzhou over the US extradition request. . The two Michaels were kept in appalling conditions for more than 1,000 days, as is known.

The two men were released immediately after boarding a flight to China after making a deal with the United States to settle the charges against Meng. Canada and its Western allies accused Beijing of “hostage diplomacy”, while China insisted the cases were irrelevant.

If Trudeau bans Huawei, it could further inflame relations between the two countries. Canada delayed it for nearly three years, as the fates of the two Michaels were at stake. The country’s closest allies, including the US, UK, and Australia, have ordered a direct ban of the company.

A separate poll by Nanos Research for Bloomberg News showed that 36% of Canadians believe relations with China have been permanently damaged because China has imprisoned executives. The survey was conducted by telephone and online from 30 September to 3 October. The margin of error is 3.1 percentage points.
