Huawei Unveils Homegrown PCs with Custom Kirin Chips and Linux OS Options

Yesterday, Huawei took a significant step towards its goal of technology independence by launching two new desktop computer models built entirely from domestic components. The Qingyun line—consisting of the W515y and W585y models—marks Huawei’s latest endeavor to provide computing solutions without relying on foreign hardware or software ecosystems.

The introduction of these systems is a strategic move by Huawei as it seeks to bolster its position in the global technology market amidst ongoing challenges. The Qingyun desktops are powered by the Kirin 9000X processor, an eight-core Arm-based chip designed with performance and efficiency in mind. This processor operates at 2.5 GHz and features a big.LITTLE or big-core only SoC design for optimal performance and power management.

One of the most notable aspects of these desktops is their use of Linux-based operating systems, a significant departure from the commonly used Windows OS in the PC market. Users can opt between UOS V20 from Tongxin and Galaxy Kylin V10, both established Linux variants that offer robust stability and security.

Technical specifications reveal that the Qingyun desktops are equipped with advanced memory configurations including quad-channel LPDDR5x memory support, alongside options for flash storage or traditional hard drives. The system ports include a Type-C USB connector and three standard USB 3.2 ports on the front, complemented by four additional USB connections, wired network capability, legacy serial interface, and dual video outputs via VGA and HDMI.

While Huawei has developed its proprietary HarmonyOS for smartphones and some laptops, it chose not to extend this custom OS to desktops at this time. This decision reflects a nuanced approach to different customer needs and the benefits of established Linux variants in desktop computing environments. The compact design of these systems—weighing approximately 3.6 kg with dimensions just under 300 mm wide—makes them suitable for diverse home office setups.

The Qingyun line represents Huawei’s commitment to developing comprehensive solutions that cater to the evolving needs of its user base, particularly in regions where technological self-reliance is paramount. By offering these desktops alongside their smartphone and tablet lineup, Huawei aims to provide a holistic computing experience built on homegrown technology.

As Huawei continues to innovate and expand its range of products with domestically developed components and software, it sets an example for other tech companies seeking to navigate complex global market dynamics. The launch of the Qingyun line is not just about hardware; it’s about signaling a new era where technological independence and robust homegrown solutions can coexist.
