Huawei won, Apple lost. It may use the name Huawei MatePod. Apple had filed legal action to prevent Huawei from using and trademarking the name “MatePod”. Apple tried to block the name “MatePod” in China. But the CNIPA (Trademark Office of China National Intellectual Property Administration) found Huawei justified.

Apple tried to block the “MatePods” trademark because the name was similar to its products, such as the iPod, EarPods, and AirPods. The Cupertino-based company argued that the Chinese tech giant “maliciously copied” its trademark, which could have a negative impact on society.

It said there was “insufficient evidence” to prove Huawei’s apps were duplicates. Apple has the right to file an additional appeal to the CNIPA to reverse this decision. Huawei and Apple officials have not yet made a statement.

The CNIPA decision recognized the similarities between both firms in matters such as “functions, sales channels and target consumers”. However, “trademarks are spelled differently, and differences in pronunciation and overall appearance are different. Therefore, the brands of the two companies are not similar brands on similar products and their coexistence does not cause confusion among consumers.”
