Huawei’s New Homegrown PCs: The Rise of Kirin 9000X and Chinese OSes

Huawei, ever the innovator in China’s tech landscape, has recently made waves with the launch of its new desktop PC lineup. These systems, the Qingyun W515y and W585y, mark a significant milestone in Huawei’s journey towards complete technological independence. With the introduction of the Kirin 9000X processor and support for Chinese-made operating systems such as Tongxin UOS V20 or Galaxy Kylin V10, these desktops are set to challenge the dominance of Windows in China.

At the heart of these new desktop PCs is HiSilicon’s Kirin 9000X CPU, an octa-core processor with a base clock speed of 2.5 GHz and up to 16 threads for efficient multitasking and high-performance computing tasks. The Kirin 9000X continues Huawei’s trend of technological self-reliance in the face of international trade restrictions, showcasing advancements that rival global tech giants.

The Power Underneath: Kirin 9000X Specs

The Kirin 9000X follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, the Kirin 9000C. This new processor includes three high-performance Cortex-A77 cores running at a base frequency of 2.5 GHz and four more efficient A55 cores for balanced performance across various workloads. Coupled with a 24-core Mali-G78 iGPU, the Kirin 9000X offers impressive graphics capabilities as well.

Originally manufactured by TSMC using their cutting-edge 5nm+ FinFET EUV process node before U.S. sanctions intervened, the Kirin 9000 series has been a testament to Huawei’s ingenuity and resilience in circumventing technological barriers.

The Operating System Edge

While hardware is crucial, software plays an equally vital role in today’s tech landscape. The Qingyun W515y and W585y come equipped with two Chinese-made operating systems: Tongxin UOS V20 or Galaxy Kylin V10. These OSes are designed to offer a seamless user experience tailored for the domestic market, challenging Microsoft’s Windows stronghold.

Tongxin UOS, in particular, aims to provide a secure and efficient environment, with features such as built-in security measures and integration with various Chinese software ecosystems that cater specifically to local users’ needs.

Design and Performance

The new Qingyun models retain the same dimensions as their predecessors (11.5 x 3.7 x 12.4 inches or 293 x 93 x 315.5 mm) but come in slightly lighter at 7.9 pounds (3.6 kg). They are designed to offer robust performance with quad-channel LPDDR5x memory and unspecified SSD and hard drive options, alongside the choice of an optical drive.

These desktops are not just about raw power; they also aim for a balanced approach between high-performance computing and energy efficiency, making them suitable for both professional workstations and everyday use.

Conclusion: A Step Towards Independence

The launch of the Qingyun W515y and W585y marks a significant stride in Huawei’s quest for technological autonomy. By leveraging their own CPU architecture and supporting Chinese operating systems, these PCs set a new benchmark in the domestic market.
