The 1X NEO is a pioneering step in home robotics, designed to perform chores through both autonomous operation and remote control by human operators.
California-based AI and robotics company 1X is making waves with its latest humanoid robot, NEO, which promises to automate everyday chores around the home through teleoperation or remote control. The machine can tackle basic tasks like opening doors, fetching items, and adjusting lights autonomously as soon as it starts shipping next year. However, for more complex or specific jobs, users will need to embrace human operators who’ll see inside their homes via NEO’s camera.
According to an interview with The Wall Street Journal’s Joanna Stern, 1X CEO Bernt Børnich emphasized that the robot relies on real-world data and experience to improve its AI neural network. Early adopters will be required to agree to human operators remotely controlling NEO in order for it to learn more intricate tasks over time.
Teleoperators play a crucial role in this learning process, with users having the power to schedule when these remote assistants take control of NEO and dictate specific tasks. This setup respects homeowners’ privacy by allowing them to manage who sees inside their homes through an app-based interface.
To protect user privacy, 1X offers features like blurring people in video feeds and setting up no-go zones within homes. By putting this control in users’ hands, the company aims to strike a balance between advancing technology and respecting personal space.
The ultimate goal is for NEO to become fully autonomous with minimal human intervention required over time. Early adopters are essentially beta testers whose feedback will help refine future iterations of the robot.
This innovative approach not only pushes the boundaries of AI and robotics but also sets a new standard in home automation, blending convenience with privacy considerations.
