JetVPN Uses Windscribe, PIA Servers; Raises Security Concern

## Free VPN App JetVPN Found Using Infrastructure of Windscribe and PIA

A popular free Android VPN application, **JetVPN**, boasting over 1 million downloads, has been discovered operating on servers belonging to established VPN providers **Windscribe** and **Private Internet Access (PIA)**. The incident underscores ongoing concerns regarding app quality control within the **Google Play Store**.

## Exploiting Provider Policies

Windscribe first identified that JetVPN was utilizing their servers, subsequently blocking the unauthorized access. According to Windscribe CEO Yegor Sak, JetVPN then transitioned to PIA servers, illustrating what Sak described as a pattern of “scammers scamming other scammers.” The developers exploited the providers’ policies allowing unlimited device connections, purchasing accounts and distributing OpenVPN credentials through the JetVPN app. While this activity did not affect existing Windscribe or PIA user data, it raises security concerns for individuals using free VPN services.

## JetVPN Responds and Google Play Store Concerns

A JetVPN spokesperson stated the company was unaware of the server misuse, attributing it to a third-party provider offering “white-label VPN” solutions. They claim to have ceased using the unauthorized infrastructure upon notification. JetVPN is currently unavailable on the Google Play Store; however, a company representative noted the removal wasn’t directly linked to the server incident. This incident joins a series of questionable VPN applications gaining popularity on the Play Store, prompting discussion about the effectiveness of Google’s app vetting process, including its “Verified” badge program.

## User Caution Advised

Industry experts recommend that users exercise caution when downloading free VPN applications. For more trustworthy alternatives, reputable free options include **Privado VPN, Proton VPN, and Windscribe Free**.
