Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg Subpoenaed in Youth Mental Health Lawsuit

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, faces a significant legal challenge as California Supreme Court has ordered CEO Mark Zuckerberg to testify in a series of consolidated lawsuits alleging the company knowingly designed platforms to be addictive, particularly impacting young users.

The lawsuits assert that Meta and other social media platforms utilized algorithms intended to maximize engagement, allegedly leading to harmful consequences. Previous attempts by the companies to prevent high-ranking executives from appearing in court were rejected. The judge emphasized the importance of these testimonies in determining whether company executives were aware of any damages caused by the platforms, should liability be established.

During the testimonies, the court will investigate the extent to which company management understood the addictive potential of their platforms. Specific questions will focus on whether reports detailing negative effects on young users, such as depression, anxiety, and self-harm, were communicated to senior leadership. A central question remains: why the companies did not abandon engagement-driving algorithms despite these concerns.

The subpoena extends beyond Zuckerberg; Snap CEO Evan Spiegel and Instagram President Adam Mosseri are also scheduled to testify in January. This legal action could trigger a far-reaching reckoning for the technology sector, reminiscent of the past legal battles faced by tobacco and opioid manufacturers. Conviction could potentially result in multi-billion dollar damages.

Separately, WhatsApp is preparing to release an enhanced version of the “mention” feature for groups.
