Huawei, the world-renowned technology giant, has joined forces with South African banking conglomerate Absa to launch a groundbreaking private cloud solution across Africa. This strategic partnership aims to drive digital transformation, enhance data security, and foster economic growth on the continent through cutting-edge IT infrastructure.

The collaboration is set to revolutionize industries by offering tailored cloud services that cater to specific needs of businesses in diverse sectors such as finance, healthcare, education, and manufacturing. The private cloud solution leverages Huawei’s advanced CloudEngine series switches and storage systems, providing unparalleled scalability, performance, and reliability for enterprise-level applications.

Enhancing Digital Capabilities Across Africa

Africa is witnessing rapid digitalization, with businesses increasingly relying on robust IT infrastructure to stay competitive. The Absa-Huawei cloud solution addresses this need by offering localized services that are designed specifically for the African market. This includes support for multiple languages and currencies, seamless integration with local systems, and tailored solutions that align with regulatory requirements.

One of the key advantages of this partnership is the ability to provide customized cloud offerings based on industry-specific requirements. For instance, financial institutions can leverage advanced data analytics tools to improve risk management and customer service, while healthcare providers can benefit from secure cloud storage for medical records and telemedicine platforms.

Data Security and Compliance

With increasing concerns over data privacy and security breaches, the Absa-Huawei private cloud solution prioritizes robust cybersecurity measures. The platform integrates Huawei’s SecoManager 6000 series products, which provide advanced threat detection and response capabilities to safeguard sensitive information.

In addition to securing data, the partnership ensures compliance with local laws and international standards such as GDPR and ISO/IEC 27001. This is crucial for organizations operating in multiple jurisdictions within Africa, ensuring they meet all regulatory obligations while maintaining operational efficiency.

Driving Economic Growth Through Digital Solutions

The deployment of Huawei’s cloud technology across Africa not only benefits individual enterprises but also contributes to broader economic development goals. By fostering innovation and enabling new business models, the partnership aims to create jobs, stimulate entrepreneurship, and improve access to digital services for underserved communities.

Moreover, Absa and Huawei have pledged to invest in training programs that equip local talent with the necessary skills to thrive in a digitally driven economy. This includes workshops on cloud computing fundamentals, cybersecurity best practices, and emerging technologies such as AI and IoT (Internet of Things).

Conclusion: A Beacon for Digital Transformation

The Absa-Huawei private cloud solution represents a significant milestone in Africa’s digital journey. By combining Absa’s deep understanding of the African market with Huawei’s cutting-edge technology, this partnership has the potential to transform industries and drive sustainable economic growth.

Stakeholders at the 17th Internet Governance Forum (IGF) have called for increased global collaboration in broadening digital inclusion in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in a joint push to promote better connectivity and greater sustainability. [Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Dec 1, 2022]

“The goal of universal and meaningful connectivity cannot be addressed through improving coverage alone. By leveraging the lessons learned from these 15 published research projects – and working to ensure access, adoption, affordability and resiliency of broadband services – together we can build back better with broadband,” said Doreen Bogdan-Martin, ITU’s Secretary-General-Elect.

The remarks were made as representatives from the 15 winning teams of the ITU Connect2Recover (C2R) Research Competition presented their report findings during a Day 0 session of the IGF in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and discussed actionable ways to contribute to digital inclusion during the global recovery.

The research grants to the global competition, launched in July 2021 as the first of its kind under ITU’s flagship global initiative C2R, were supported by Huawei, an ITU-D Sector Member.

“Thanks to the ITU team as well as all the research teams who have made the research competition a success. The work that has gone into these projects is true to the core of Huawei’s mission to leave no one behind in our striving for a fully connected, intelligent world,” said Karl Song, Vice President of Corporate Communications at Huawei, adding that the company “will try to make the most of the insights gained by the research projects and turn selected recommendations into reality”.

A compilation of the summaries of each report, titled Build back better with broadband: Research stories from the front line, was also published at the occasion.

The 15 winning teams represent 43 universities and institutions from 22 countries worldwide, and focused on digital connectivity, resilience, and digital inclusion for education, healthcare, enterprises, job creation, as well as vulnerable groups. Their reports focused on empirical evidence gathered from 17 countries in Africa, Asia Pacific, the Americas and the Arab States.

The teams were evaluated and selected by an impartial international jury that reviewed 307 proposals from 80 countries.
