While Meta has already debuted smart glasses, including a model with a display integrated into eyewear, Samsung is planning to launch “Galaxy Glasses” powered by Android XR. Samsung halts One UI 8 rollout for Galaxy S23 family

Samsung started rolling out the update to One UI 8 based on Android 16 to the Galaxy S23 devices in late September, around three weeks ago. Everything was going well, until it wasn't. The rollout is currently paused, and it's unclear when it will be resumed, so if you have a handset that's part of that family and haven't received the update yet, chances are you're in for a longer wait than you were expecting. Samsung hasn't revealed why it's taken this step either. There don't seem to be any widespread reports of big issues from people that have installed the update. That said, the company has surely found something that needed fixing and decided to halt the rollout out of an abundance of caution. Hopefully it manages to fix whatever the problem was quickly and the rollout can resume soone...

Gboard now lets you hide the period and comma keys

After widely rolling out the “Font size” setting last week, the latest Gboard for Android update lets you hide the period and comma keys. Under Gboard Settings > Preferences, you’ll find new toggles for “Comma key” and “Period key: Show on keyboard for applicable languages.” They are enabled by default and this has been the layout for years. If turned off, Gboard’s bottom row will just be ‘?123’ and the enter key for a cleaner look. It makes for a very wide space bar. You can always double-press the space bar for a period, but removing the comma is a curious move. That said, you could disable that, but keep the Emoji key (which has been an option for some time now) for a more symmetrical design with the period. We’re seeing this widely rolled out on the beta and stable channels with Gbo...

After previewing last December as Project Moohan, the Samsung Galaxy XR is now available as the first headset running Google’s new Android XR operating system. Android XR Google heavily emphasizes Gemini’s role in Android XR. In addition to hand (gestures) and eye input, voice can be used to navigate apps and the OS. In terms of first-party app support, Google Maps, Photos, TV, Meet, Chrome, and YouTube have been updated for Android XR. Google Maps offers an Immersive View to explore the world in 3D: “Walk the streets of Tokyo before you book a trip, soar over the Grand Canyon or even revisit your old neighborhood.” You can look at landmarks and ask “What’s the story behind this building?” to Gemini. Similarly, Circle to Search is available on both virtual and real-world (with passthrough)...
