Qualcomm made waves this week with the unveiling of its new range of artificial intelligence chips, setting the stage for a fierce competition against industry leader NVIDIA. The company’s latest offerings, the AI200 and AI250 chipsets, are designed to cater to the increasing demand for high-performance AI solutions in data centers.

The Qualcomm AI200 chipset is geared towards enhancing large-scale machine learning inference tasks. It boasts a robust memory configuration of 768GB LPDDR, enabling cost-effective and scalable deployments for both language models and multimodal applications. This setup ensures that the card can manage vast data sets with ease, offering an optimal balance between performance and efficiency.

On the other hand, the Qualcomm AI250 chipset leverages near-memory computing technology to deliver superior memory bandwidth. By integrating innovative memory architecture, it promises to reduce power consumption while increasing processing capabilities significantly—over tenfold in some cases. This breakthrough in chip design is expected to revolutionize how AI tasks are handled at the data center level.

The introduction of these chips has not only sparked excitement among tech enthusiasts but also boosted Qualcomm’s stock value by over 20% as investors anticipate a surge in demand for advanced AI solutions.

Meanwhile, Meituan has taken a significant step towards enhancing the welfare of its delivery workforce. Starting today, a nationwide rider pension subsidy program will be made available to all Meituan drivers across China. This initiative is part of Meituan’s ongoing efforts to ensure that their flexible and independent workers receive comprehensive benefits.

This move represents a landmark in the gig economy as it marks the first time an entire platform workforce has been given access to pension subsidies. The scheme allows riders to choose whether they prefer to contribute from their place of residence or where they work, providing flexibility to cater to individual needs and preferences.

OpenAI Reveals Troubling Stats on Mental Health Support Requests

In related news, OpenAI has revealed some concerning statistics regarding the mental health impact of its AI chatbot, ChatGPT. According to new data released this week, a significant number of users—around .15% of weekly active participants—are engaging in conversations about suicidal ideation.

This figure translates into more than one million individuals seeking support or expressing such thoughts each week via the platform. While these interactions remain relatively rare within the context of overall usage, they underscore the critical role AI could play in addressing mental health crises.

Further Developments: Apple’s Monopoly Case Faces Setback

The legal battle over Apple’s alleged monopoly practices continues to heat up. A significant development this week saw a U.S. federal judge overturning previous rulings that had allowed the case against Apple to proceed as a class action lawsuit.

This decision was prompted by Apple’s successful challenge of the plaintiffs’ models used for calculating damages, leading to doubts about the collective nature of harm suffered by users. As such, the scope of the litigation has been narrowed down considerably, focusing only on those with more substantial spending within the App Store ecosystem.

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Atlas, a new browser aiming to integrate its AI chatbot at the center of web browsing. The browser enters a market already occupied by Perplexity’s Comet and Google Gemini in Chrome, but early testing suggests the experience requires refinement.

ChatGPT Atlas operates on a Chromium base and is currently exclusive to macOS, with versions for other platforms planned. The interface is minimalist, featuring a collapsible ChatGPT history tab, a URL bar with integrated search, and an “Ask ChatGPT” button for contextual queries. ChatGPT Plus, Business, and Pro users have access to “agentic mode” for task completion, such as adding items to shopping carts.

While ChatGPT Atlas excels at generating AI responses, its web search capabilities are less effective. When performing searches like “news near me,” the AI-generated response was accurate, but the linked search results included locations outside the user’s area. Compared to competitors like Comet, which integrates with TripAdvisor, ChatGPT Atlas lacks detailed location information like reviews and images.

The browser displays options to search for images, videos, and news, and includes a “browser memories” feature for tailored suggestions. It also features an agentic mode for completing tasks, but initial tests show performance issues. Attempting to populate an Amazon cart took approximately 10 minutes, considerably slower than competing AI browsers. Conversely, composing emails and creating calendar events proved faster, but even those tasks experienced occasional errors, like misinterpreting dates.

Despite its features, ChatGPT Atlas presents a less-than-compelling introduction to OpenAI’s vision for an AI-powered ecosystem. Given the existing integrations within ChatGPT itself – including those for services like Zillow and Spotify – a dedicated browser feels somewhat redundant. While AI holds promise for the future of search, ChatGPT Atlas requires substantial improvement to attract users away from established browsers like Chrome.

For decades, Google has maintained a dominant position as the primary gateway for consumers seeking information and services online. This long-held supremacy is now facing a significant challenge from ChatGPT, with a new analysis suggesting a potential annual revenue impact of approximately $30.4 billion for Google. This potential shift stems from the launch of ChatGPT’s first AI browser, Atlas.

Flywheel Studio’s analysis predicts this substantial impact based on ChatGPT’s rapidly growing user base. The platform currently boasts an estimated 800 million weekly active users. Assuming an industry-average of 3.5 searches per day per user, and a shift away from Google’s 90.4% market share, the daily revenue impact could reach $83 million.

The challenge extends beyond simple search volume. ChatGPT Atlas’s capabilities potentially disrupt Google’s core business model by functioning as an “extensible platform.” Traditionally, Google operates as an intermediary; users search, receive a list of links, and then navigate to services like Zillow or OpenTable. ChatGPT Atlas allows users to directly access applications like Expedia or Booking.com without ever visiting Google’s search engine results page (SERP), effectively bypassing Google’s advertising revenue streams.

While Google recently announced a Gemini AI-powered upgrade for Chrome aiming to transform it into an “AI browser” with agentic capabilities, these features are not expected to be available to users until at least December. Meanwhile, ChatGPT Atlas is currently available on Mac devices. This shift represents more than just a loss of search queries; OpenAI’s browser aims to capture entire commerce and service journeys, highlighting the magnitude of the potential market disruption.

Key takeaways:

A new analysis estimates ChatGPT’s AI browser, Atlas, could cost Google approximately $30.4 billion annually.

This projection is based on 800 million weekly active ChatGPT users shifting an average of 3.5 searches per day away from Google.

ChatGPT Atlas allows users to access services directly, bypassing Google’s SERP and advertising model.

OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT Atlas, a new AI-powered browser, during a livestream on Tuesday. While joining a growing list of AI browsers like The Browser Company’s Dia, Opera’s Neon, Perplexity’s Comet, and Strawberry, Atlas’s launch stands out due to OpenAI’s potential reach of approximately 800 million weekly ChatGPT users. The primary focus appears to be deepening the integration of ChatGPT, rather than reinventing the web browsing experience itself.

Currently available only on macOS, OpenAI plans to expand Atlas to Windows, iOS, and Android platforms. Notably, OpenAI opted for universal user access rather than a limited invite system. The browser aims to position ChatGPT as the initial point of interaction for search and answers, challenging the traditional role of search engines like Google. The core concept involves typing queries directly into the address bar to receive answers from the AI chatbot, moving away from browsing pages of search results.

OpenAI’s CEO of applications, Fidji Simo, emphasized the strategic shift, stating that ChatGPT is evolving “to become the operating system for your life.” Features like the browser’s memory function – which combines browsing history with ChatGPT interaction logs to provide context-aware responses – provide OpenAI with valuable user data. This data can potentially enhance personalization across its products and services, including potential integrations with a future “Sign in with ChatGPT” system.

The launch of Atlas represents a larger effort by OpenAI to control its distribution channels, mirroring Meta’s recent decision to restrict third-party chatbot access on WhatsApp. While the browser doesn’s feature standard browsing enhancements like ad-blocking or VPN functionality, the integrated features aim to improve user experience through ChatGPT. The ultimate challenge for OpenAI is convincing users to switch from established browsers like Chrome, Safari, and Edge to embrace Atlas and solidify ChatGPT’s place as the default starting point for online interactions.

The founder of the Chinese tech giant said that Huawei Technologies has replaced more than 13,000 parts in its products affected by the US trade sanctions, according to a transcript released by a Chinese university on Friday (March 17).

According to the text of the February speech released by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Ren Zhengfei said that in the past three years, Huawei has replaced 13,000 components with domestic Chinese counterparts and redesigned 4,000 circuit boards for its products, “stabilizing” the production of circuit boards.

The statements, which Reuters could not independently verify, provided a window into Huawei’s efforts to bounce back from US trade restrictions. Since 2019, Huawei, a major supplier of equipment used in 5G telecommunications networks, has repeatedly been the target of US export controls.

These controls cut off both Huawei’s supply of chips from US companies and access to US technology tools to design and manufacture its own chips by its partners.

Huawei’s logo is seen at an exhibition in Paris on Jun 15, 2022. (File photo: Reuters/Benoit Tessier)

The Biden administration also banned the sale of new Huawei equipment in the US last year. The university said Ren said these words in a conversation with Chinese technologists on February 24. A US-based Huawei representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday.

Ren said Huawei has invested US$23.8 billion in research and development in 2022 and that “we will continue to increase R&D spending as our profitability grows.” The founder said the company has built its own enterprise resource planning system called MetaERP. It will launch in April and will help run core business functions including finance, supply chain and manufacturing operations.

Ren said Huawei has no plans to launch a competitor to the wildly popular big language model artificial intelligence ChatGPT, but Microsoft, a backer of OpenAI, the app’s developer, won’t be the only dominant player. He said Huawei is focused on being the “core computing power platform” of artificial intelligence.
