Samsung is reportedly testing a battery that could change the game for smartphone longevity: a massive 20,000mAh dual-cell unit designed to last an incredible 27 hours with the screen on. However, there’s a catch.

✓Samsung is developing a 20,000mAh battery for smartphones

What’s in Store?

The new battery is said to be based on silicon-carbon technology and consists of two cells: one at 12,000mAh and another at 8,000mAh, with combined thicknesses of just under 10.3mm. The larger cell alone could outperform current high-capacity batteries from competitors like Honor.

The Longevity Question

Despite promising short-term performance, the battery faces longevity issues. During testing, it reportedly swelled to a significant extent—expanding by 75% in thickness after some charge cycles. This could be a dealbreaker for everyday use, as smartphones need reliable batteries over time.

The source claims that while the battery can survive roughly 960 charge cycles per year, its long-term stability is still unclear. For now, it’s best to take this information with a grain of salt until more concrete data emerges from Samsung.

According to reports, Samsung is selling the upcoming Galaxy Z TriFold at a loss in its home market of Korea. The device’s production cost reportedly exceeds its $2,440 price tag.

The Reason Behind the Price Drop

Selling the phone below its manufacturing costs could be a strategic move to boost sales and adoption. If priced higher, it might scare off potential buyers due to its already hefty price point of around $2,440 in Korea. In comparison, when Huawei launched its tri-fold last year, some enthusiasts were willing to pay nearly $5,000 to import the device from China.

Different Prices Across Markets

However, the Galaxy Z TriFold is priced higher outside of South Korea. For instance, it’s listed at about $3,260 in the UAE — a 33% increase compared to its Korean price. This suggests that Samsung might be subsidizing the device in Korea to make it more accessible.

US Launch on the Horizon

The US launch of the Galaxy Z TriFold is expected sometime early next year. CES, happening in January, could provide further details about this new model. Additionally, Samsung has a First Look event scheduled for Sunday, January 4th, at 7 PM PT.

I recently had the chance to try Huawei’s latest foldable device, the Pura X. After spending some time with it, I’m convinced that Samsung should seriously consider adopting this form factor for their next generation of devices.

✓Huawei’s Pura X offers a compact and versatile design

✓The device stands out in the crowded foldable market

What’s Unique About The Pura X?

The Pura X offers a truly distinctive approach to the foldable phone segment. Unlike most competitors who stick closely to traditional smartphone designs, Huawei’s device takes an innovative turn with its compact yet versatile design. It features a smaller screen when folded compared to other devices on the market, making it easier to carry around while still providing ample space for viewing content.

Why Samsung Should Take Note

Samsung has dominated the foldable phone market in recent years, but there’s room for experimentation with new form factors. By copying Huawei’s Pura X design, they could attract users looking for something fresh and practical. The compact size of the Pura X makes it stand out in a crowded field, offering potential benefits over larger, more cumbersome alternatives.

Overall, if Samsung can learn from this approach, they might just find themselves with an even stronger product lineup that appeals to those who prioritize portability without sacrificing functionality.

Testing Process

The Galaxy Z TriFold undergoes extensive testing with over 200,000 folding cycles, water resistance tests that meet IP48 standards, and checks for dust and shock resistance. Two Armor-Flex hinges are installed by robots to ensure precision, followed by a process where the main display is bonded under pressure for stability.

Comparison with Huawei Mate XT

The Samsung model features a larger 10-inch screen when unfolded compared to the Huawei Mate XT’s 8.1 inches. The Galaxy Z TriFold uses dual hinges, while the Huawei device relies on one hinge and a magnetic closure mechanism. In terms of water resistance, Samsung’s IP48 rating is lower than Huawei’s IP53 but it may offer better performance with its advanced processor.

The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold aims to attract tech enthusiasts and business users who might use the device as an alternative to notebooks. The launch is set for February or March 2026, possibly during Mobile World Congress.

Since I first tested Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate trifold phone, I’ve been looking forward to Samsung unveiling a similar device. Rumors have it that the South Korean tech giant will release its own triple-screen foldable in just a couple of weeks on December 5th.

During an earnings call back in August, Samsung hinted at its plans for innovative form factors with a new trifold phone in development. However, when the company showcased its dual-hinge design during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation CEO Summit in South Korea, I was concerned about how it stacks up against Huawei’s creation.

The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate features two hinges that enable various modes of usage – as a standard phone, a small tablet, or even a full-size tablet. In contrast, Samsung’s design seems to be more akin to folding an already foldable Galaxy Z device in half again. This approach creates a G-shaped form rather than the Z-shape seen with Huawei’s offering.

Another key difference lies in the screen arrangements: while Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate presents one continuous display that unfolds into a larger panel, Samsung has opted for an additional cover screen on its trifold model to access the inner display when fully closed. This design choice might impact user convenience and durability concerns compared to Huawei’s single-screen layout.

Despite these divergences in hardware implementation, both devices aim to offer unique and flexible form factors that could cater to different user needs. However, based on my experience with the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate, I am somewhat skeptical if Samsung’s trifold will match the utility and intuitiveness of its Chinese counterpart.
