Mini PCs offer compelling advantages – compact size and cleaner aesthetics – but their appeal isn’t always clear-cut. While I’m a long-time enthusiast, with my primary workstation powered by an M4 Mac Mini, it’s important to be aware of potential drawbacks before investing. Here are four things often overlooked when considering a mini PC for daily use.

Noise Levels: Despite their small footprint, mini PCs can be surprisingly loud. Due to the use of laptop-grade, energy-efficient processors and a general lack of discrete GPUs, cooling requirements might seem minimal. However, many models feature fans that spin up considerably even during light usage, such as web browsing or video conferencing. While Linux often exhibits quieter operation compared to Windows, the difference diminishes under heavier workloads. The M4 Mac Mini remains a notable exception, offering significantly quieter performance.

Power Supply Design: Unlike traditional desktops, mini PCs frequently employ external power bricks, often resembling those found on older laptops. This design adds clutter and detracts from the clean aesthetic that many choose a mini PC to achieve. While some newer models incorporate USB-C power delivery and devices like the Mac Mini utilize a built-in power supply, the issue remains prevalent.

Limited Ports: While impressive given their size, the number of ports on many mini PCs can become a limiting factor. Windows-based models often lack USB Type-C ports, requiring adapters for peripherals. Even models with a respectable number of ports, such as the Mac Mini’s five USB-C ports, can quickly become oversubscribed, as demonstrated by issues encountered while live streaming, requiring adapters or prioritization of connected devices.

Brand Reputation and Support: A significant portion of available mini PCs originate from lesser-known brands, often lacking the support infrastructure of established manufacturers like HP, Lenovo, or Dell. This can result in difficulties obtaining assistance and potential issues with hardware reliability, such as inconsistent Wi-Fi performance or display flickering. The M4 Mac Mini stands out as a well-supported and thoroughly tested alternative. Despite these considerations, the space-saving benefits of a mini PC remain a compelling advantage. Increased competition and options from reputable brands would greatly enhance the overall user experience.
