Honor Reveals Prototype of Rotating Camera Smartphone at Internal Event

Honor recently unveiled a physical prototype of its so-called Robot Phone for the first time. Previously existing only as a digital concept study, Honor showed off an actual working model during an internal event. This prototype features a mechanically movable camera that can pivot and rotate thanks to precise micromotors.

The unique design aims to enhance flexibility in photographing by allowing the user to adjust the camera angle precisely as needed. According to Honor’s presentation, this setup is intended to support functionalities such as real-time face recognition, selfies, and automatic tracking—a feature set that hasn’t been seen before on any smartphone.

Despite the impressive mechanical movement demonstrated during the unveiling event, Honor did not couple the camera with operational software for practical use. The lack of functional software integration has led to skepticism within the tech community about whether this concept will ever become a market-ready product. Earlier in summer 2025, Honor had announced plans for the Robot Phone’s release in 2026 but no official data sheet or indications of mass production have surfaced since.

The complex mechanics involved could potentially make the device expensive and prone to wear over time. Observers speculate that Honor might be using this concept primarily as a technology demonstration, much like how some manufacturers once showed rollable or transparent displays without ever producing them on a large scale.

Through the Robot Phone prototype, Honor illustrates that there is still room for experimentation in smartphone design. Whether it will materialize into a commercially viable product remains to be seen, with 2026 marking the earliest possible timeline for its market launch.
